Details About Soap Making Classes at St. Vrain Soap Company

If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that no one can ever have too much soap. But buying soap from the store isn’t as fun (or as natural) as making your own. If you’re looking to lather up with a new habit, the St. Vrain Soap Company is ready to offer some hands-on experience. Here’s what you should know about their soap making classes:

Soap-making for Beginners

The classes at the St. Vrain Soap Company are designed for beginners, which means you don’t need to love lye or have an Irish Spring in your step. You only need to be looking for a way to learn about creating sustainable and natural soaps void of synthetic dyes and fragrances.

The classes take place in downtown Longmont on two Saturdays a month and hold up to 16 people (although anyone wanting a private class is encouraged to contact the business). Because part of the process involves handling sodium hydroxide (lye), only those 16 and older can participate. Classes run for approximately two hours.

In the class, participants will learn the following:

  • How to make a loaf of soap in one of three scents

  • The mixing and measuring component of each step of the process

  • The principles of soap-making

  • How to safely handle lye

  • How to make cold-process soap

  • The tricks to designing, curing, and storing soap

  • How palm-free oils and plant-based oils benefit the soap-making process.

  • How essential oils and natural additives enhance soap

Each participant will leave with nine bars of handcrafted soap in four scents (a retail value of over $75), a step-by-step instruction guide, and a triple-butter soap recipe in four variations.

Participants will also receive 20% off in-store purchases on the day of their class as well as the option to purchase a soap-making starter kit. This will allow newly minted soap-makers a chance to practice at home.

Whether you’re interested in discovering a hidden talent, you’re curious about exploring a novel hobby, or you just really like germ-free hands, a soap-making class is the ideal chance to engage in some good, clean fun.
