When October rolls around each year, we can’t help but get
excited for the chance to return to our childhoods, if only for a night. Second
to Christmas, Halloween is the second largest holiday in the United States. Perhaps
it’s the trick-or-treating memories from grade school, fall festivals packed
with friends, or corn mazes filled with laughter that make us look forward to
this spooky, exciting night. To celebrate all the good, scary fun that
Halloween has to offer, binge watch these 10 movies for a slow roll lead up to
this thrilling occasion.
Halloween
No scary movie list would be complete without this thriller.
Released in 1978, Halloween
was one of the original slasher movies and gave Jamie Lee Curtis an awesome
stage to flaunt her acting talents. Michael Myers remains one of the creepiest
villains of all time and this movie is truly timeless. Even the Library of
Congress added this legendary flick to preserve in the National
Film Registry because of its aesthetic, culture, and historical
significance. Halloween
Kills, the twelfth installment of the Halloween franchise, is set to
hit theaters on October 15th.
Scream
This cult-favorite still elicits laughter, cheers, and
screams no matter how many times you’ve seen it. Scream
came out in the late 90’s and humorously pushed against female stereotypes
portrayed in horror movies from decades’ past.
Hocus Pocus
While less scary than other Halloween films, Hocus Pocus
is great fun for people of all ages. Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler, and
Kathy Najimy star in this witchy flick and create all sorts of havoc on
Halloween. Equal parts comedy and jump-scares, host a fun night by encouraging
your friends to dress up in their best witch costume.
The Shining
Jack Nicholson’s acting ability truly shines in this creepy Stanley Kubrick
film. The Shining
follows a caretaker and his family as they look after a remote mountain resort.
The movie follows Jack Torrance as he slowly loses his mind in the empty hotel.
Beetlejuice
This black comedy film is one of Tim Burton’s bests.
Starring Alec Baldwin, Gina Davis, and Michael Keaton, humor meets horror at
every turn. The film follows Baldwin and Davis, who were recently deceased and
are now ghosts haunting their home. Upon saying his name three times, Beetlejuice rises
out of the ether in his black and white striped suit to pester all who cross
his path, other ghosts included.
Get Out
Released in 2017 to much fanfare, Get Out follows a Black
photographer as he visits his white girlfriend’s childhood home one weekend.
Subtly racist tones from her family and friends grow strong alongside eerie,
unsettling vibes. Find out if the main character is ever able to Get Out by
watching this flick.
The Blair Witch Project
As the first of its kind, this found-footage film is a
fictional story shot in documentary-style by teens who venture into the woods
one weekend. The Blair Witch
Project begins with light-hearted notes as excited teens trample about
the quiet woods. As night falls, strange things begin to happen. Will they make
it out of the forest alive or succumb to the legend of the Blair Witch?
Paranormal Activity
If you’re a fan of jump scares, this is the scary movie for
you. Paranormal
Activity was widely popular upon release and has six subsequent
films. The first is ultimately the best, however. Its original plot uses found footage
to convey a homemade, documentary-style as it follows a couple being haunted by
a paranormal entity in their home. Watch as the mayhem unfolds each night,
growing increasingly worse.
Practical Magic
For rom-com film fanatics, Practical Magic has a
little bit of thrill and a little bit of love. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman
star in this beloved, feel-good film. Perfect for a ladies’ night in, Practical
Magic is about a coven of witches suffering from a romantic curse in which
any men that decides to love them eventually passes away tragically. Follow the
sisters as they try to reverse the curse.
The Silence of the Lambs
Dr. Hannibal Lecter will make your skin crawl in this
psychological thriller. Cheer young FBI agent Jodi Foster on as she works to
catch serial killer Buffalo Bill. If you haven’t yet seen this iconic scary
movie, this Halloween season is the perfect time to put The
Silence of the Lambs on your “must-watch” list.
Turn off the lights, pop some corn, and invite friends over
